The future of Women and Children Protection Units (WCPU) in the ARMM

The Signing of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the establishment of Women and Children Protection Unit (WCPU) in Amai Pakpak Medical Center, DSWD-ARMM Regional Secretary stressed that there will be the institution of new services for women and children in the ARMM happened in the Islamic City of Marawi recently.

“As head of DSWD-ARMM, it is our responsibility to make sure that our women and children, especially those who are victims of abuse, are protected and have access to the services from the government thatshould be present in DSWD, DOH and other agencies. We’re very happy that finally the Amai Pakpak Medical Center will have it’s own WCPU and we’re looking forward that we will soon have WCPUs in all of provincial hospitals in ARMM,” Atty. Alamia said.

The Amai Pakpak Medical Center in the Islamic City of Marawi is about to set up a WCPU in partnership with Child Protection Network (CPN), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) with DSWD-ARMM and Department of Health (DOH). Advocate of the rights of women and children, Atty. Katrina Legarda and CPN Executive Director Dr. Bernadette Madrid were also in attendance.

“The team will be coordinating with other provincial hospitals in ARMM to set up WCPUs that will be manned by doctors, social workers and PNP trainees to provide services to traumatized/abused women and children.”

Multidisciplinary team training for WCPU staff (doctor, nurse, social worker, PNP personnel) on women and children protection will be done at UP-PGH, Manila. The WCPUs will provide psychosocial services for abused women and children, including those suffering from PTSD and other traumas as a result of conflict and other causes. WCPUs are targeted to be set up in all provincial hospitals in ARMM in the next few months.
